The United States is divided into Hardiness Zones to make it easier to know which
trees, plants and shrubs will grow and thrive in your location. The lower Hudson
Valley ranges from zone 5 – 6 which means that our winters can reach temperatures
of -20 degrees Fahrenheit. This is important because while some trees and plants
may look beautiful growing in sunny California, they probably wouldn’t survive a
New York winter!(For more information on Hardiness Zones, visit http://www.usna.usda.gov/index.html)
To figure out what trees will do best on your property, check out the Northern Trees
website at: http://orb.at.ufl.edu/TREES/index.html for pictures and information.
The Arbor Day Foundation also has plenty of information on trees and the ecosystem.
Visit http://www.arborday.org/trees/index.cfm for more information.
The same Hardiness Zone ratings are true for shrubs, bushes and flowers – both
annuals and perennials. To get an idea of what’s available, these websites below
